Standing in the Hostel foyer at Cecil John Rhodes - Junior school, and listing to the Hunter jets "Green Leader" screaming freedom over the Rhodesian Sky on their way to Westlands farm, was but a small justification for the terror of listening to fellow country men over the farm band short wave radio being attacked by a miserable band of misfits and cowards. The immense sense of National pride listening to Prime Minister Ian Smith, telling the world the truth and taking the stand for justice, goodness and righteousness, made us so proud and strong. Ian Smith, you are and will always remain the overwhelming pride of Rhodesia and her Tribe, and will forever live in our hearts and minds and as the saying goes 'Rhodesians never die". God Bless and travel well. We salute you. |

I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Smith at a convention in Las Vegas many years ago, and he signed a couple of Rhodesian flags for me. He was one of the most brilliant men I ever met, and he seemed to know everyone in the country - he told me about my grandmother and other relatives....His voice and vision will be missed..... |

I have never been to Rhodesia, nor had any relatives who lived in the country, to the best of knowledge. My research on Rhodesia has enlighten ma about how beautiful the country was,the beginnings of intergration of democracy for the Africans living within in her midst. In short a people who were building a nation. At the helm during this period was the honorable, respected, late Prime Minister Ian Smith. A man whose action of proclaming Rhodesia's Unilateral Declaration of Independence from Britian, had it been done a century before, would've made him a great patriot. A president along the lines of George Washington. A gentleman farmer, political leader, revered by some, reveiled by others. Yet, a righteous rebel who had the concern of all his citizens living under the rule of the Rhodesian Parilament. His love of Rhodesia and her people became evident from the fact he never left the country when Zimbabwe replaced Rhodesia. Mr.Smith lived in his house in Salisbury with no protection from walls, security forces, armies, unlike Robert Mugabe. Many times people would walk into his home and ask for help in what ever way he could. Many of these requesting his assistance were black natives of Zimbabwe. They viewed him as their unofficial president. While Mr.Smith's passing is certainly a loss to his immediate family friends, the world has lost a great statesman. A statesman whose decisions extended beyond the next election, but rather for the next generation of citizens. Today's dictorial, elected officials make decisions with no regard for the ramifications of future generations. The spirit of Ian Smith lives on in all who persevere for liberty, justice, honesty. |

A great man. Prime Minister Smith fought against the forces of fascism and communism. Always opposing totalitarianism. He set an inspiring example for us all, fighting for what is right. His service in WWII and his service to his country will always be remembered. I am so saddened to see him go, but he is now resting in peace, reunited with his wife. I am sure he is smiling. My deepest sympathy goes out to the Prime Minister's family and friends. |
